QueensCourt

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The two basic components of QueensCourt half-court basketball are:

1. Continuous motion - the only time the game stops is when a foul is called, the ball goes out-of-bounds, or an infraction (double-dribble/traveling etc.)  The ball does not get checked-in after a made basket

2. Losers out - unlike conventional half-court basketball, the other team gets the ball after a made basket

So here's how it works in action:

Team A starts w/ the ball at the top of the key and must pass it in to begin.

-If they score, then Team B takes possession of the ball as it exits the net or off the ground -

either way it is a live ball.

Team B must take it back to anywhere on the 3-point line before they can try to score.  Remember, it is a live ball and they can do this as speedily as they want without checking it

-If Team A doesn't score it's still live as in conventional half-court, thus team A can go straight back up if they get the rebound, while Team B must take it back to the 3pt line before they can score

Got it so far?

The above scenarios continue until the pre-determined winning score is achieved - say 6 by ones.

Other considerations:

-if there isn't a clearly delineated 3-pt line on a given court then the ball should be taken back to the foul line and there are no wing (side) take back options.

-one mistake a lot of newbies make w/ QueensCourt is taking the the ball over the baseline (out-of-bounds) after a made basket and quickly passing it in.  Wrong - the ball is live out of the net, BUT the opposing team has the right to gain full control - there's no battle for it after a basket is made.

Also, if the ball immediately lands out of bounds after a made basket, the opposing team just plays it back in bounds - no check though

-once the opposing team establishes full possession after a made basket they do not have to pass it to a teammate before attempting a shot, the rebounder can dribble it back to the 3pt line and then it's free to shoot by her or him

-take back = line touch, not completely over

-likewise the opposing team can steal the ball as it is being taken back to the 3pt line, whether by pick or pass

-air balls and steals (incld'g stolen passes) can go straight up, they do not have to be taken back to the 3pt line.  Air ball is an air ball = no rim, net, or backboard

-On the 3 exceptions above when the game is stopped (foul/OB/infractions) the ball should be taken out at top-of-key

-Recommendation: games should be kept short - 6 pts by ones max

'QueensCourt' Basketball for High School Girls is a NYS Parks Department program that takes place April through June and Sept through November at the Gantry Plaza State Park basketball courts on 48th Avenue in Long Island City and is open to all girls going into grades 9 - 12.

In Fall 2024 it will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4pm to 6pm and Saturdays from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. It is priced at only $45 thanks to a generous subsidy from the NYS Parks Department, but spots are limited.

The basic goal of this program is to get girls comfortable with going to the outdoor courts and playing pickup, and simultaneously creating a universe of NYC girls comfortable with doing so to help reinforce the impetus to get out there.

The second and equally important goal is to get girls more playing time on the basketball court. The traditional school season is only 3.5 months long and non-seasonal alternatives like AAU and travel teams require a considerable commitment. As an added bonus, this program should translate to a much better player on the court come next season.
